The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has unveiled the National Green Certificates Programme, a groundbreaking initiative designed to revolutionize sustainable building practices across the country. This programme is a crucial component of the UAE’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the National Demand-side Management Programme and the National Green Building Regulation.

Objectives of the National Green Certificates Programme

The National Green Certificates Programme aims to establish rigorous standards for various aspects of building design and operation, including:

  • Energy Efficiency: Implementing advanced technologies and practices to minimize energy consumption in buildings.
  • Water Management: Promoting sustainable water usage and management practices to reduce waste and conserve resources.
  • Indoor Air Quality: Ensuring that buildings provide a healthy environment for occupants through effective air quality management.
  • Sustainable Building Materials: Encouraging the use of eco-friendly materials in construction to reduce environmental impact.

The MoEI will provide technical support and consultations to businesses participating in the programme, ensuring they meet the highest sustainability standards.

Statements from Officials

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of the programme in promoting a green economy and sustainable development. He stated, “The Programme is a framework for classifications and requirements for enhancing sustainability and cutting down the carbon footprint of commercial buildings through identifying unified basics that ensure the latest world-class criteria for sustainable buildings are applied.”

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, highlighted that the programme would significantly contribute to the UAE’s net-zero target by 2050. He noted that it would help reduce energy and water consumption, thereby promoting a resilient infrastructure that meets future development needs.

Collaborations and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs)

To bolster the impact of the National Green Certificates Programme, the MoEI has signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with key stakeholders:

  1. First Abu Dhabi Bank: This partnership will explore green finance solutions to enhance the built environment sector. The bank will support energy efficiency targets and develop innovative financing solutions for sustainable practices.
  2. Aldar Properties: This collaboration focuses on implementing tailored green finance solutions to promote energy-efficient practices within the built environment sector. Aldar Properties will also provide technical services and participate in joint initiatives to advance sustainability.
  3. Pact Carbon: This MoU will facilitate access to global carbon credit markets for programme participants, enhancing their sustainability efforts and providing additional financial incentives for adopting green practices.
  4. Meagle Energy: This partnership will establish a framework for providing energy auditing and Measurement and Verification (M&V) services to ensure compliance with the programme’s standards. Meagle Energy will conduct energy audits according to the guidelines set by the MoEI.

The Role of Carbon Credits

The integration of carbon credits into the National Green Certificates Programme is particularly noteworthy. By facilitating access to global markets for carbon credits, the programme not only incentivizes businesses to adopt sustainable practices but also creates a financial mechanism to reward those efforts. Companies that reduce their carbon footprint can earn credits that can be sold or traded, providing an additional revenue stream while contributing to the UAE’s environmental goals.

Conclusion

The launch of the National Green Certificates Programme marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s journey towards sustainability. By setting clear standards and fostering collaborations with key stakeholders, the MoEI aims to enhance the sustainability of the built environment, contributing to the UAE’s vision of a greener future. This initiative not only supports the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 but also positions the UAE as a leader in sustainable development and green economy practices. The National Green Certificates Programme represents a comprehensive approach to integrating sustainability into the fabric of the UAE’s infrastructure and economic development, ensuring a resilient and environmentally friendly future for generations to come.
