UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure launches national green certificates programme
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Abu Dhabi, UAE – July 11, 2024: In a landmark move to bolster its environmental sustainability efforts, the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI) has launched a comprehensive national green certificates programme. This pioneering initiative will transform the country’s approach to renewable energy, green buildings, and sustainable practices. Moreover, it positions the UAE as a global leader. In the fight against climate change, the UAE will stand at the forefront.

The programme’s overarching objectives aim to significantly reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint and enhance sustainability across various sectors. Additionally, it encourages sustainable development and supports the country’s climate action commitments. By providing a robust certification framework, the MOEI aims to incentivize and recognize entities that prioritize environmental protection. Furthermore, it seeks to promote the adoption of eco-friendly practices.

“This national green certificates programme demonstrates the UAE’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” said H.E. Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. “We are confident that this initiative will catalyze a transformative shift. It will move us towards a greener, more sustainable future. Moreover, it will benefit not only the UAE but also the entire region and the global community.”

Comprehensive Certification Criteria

The green certificates programme will encompass three key areas: green buildings, renewable energy projects, and sustainable practices. Entities seeking certification will undergo a rigorous evaluation process to ensure they meet the programme’s stringent sustainability criteria.

The certification for green buildings will recognize structures that demonstrate exceptional energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of sustainable materials. Renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and geothermal installations, will also receive certificates for their contribution to the UAE’s clean energy transition.

Furthermore, the programme will certify companies and organizations that have implemented sustainable practices in their operations, including waste management, carbon footprint reduction, and the promotion of environmental awareness among employees and stakeholders.

Collaborative Approach to Drive Adoption

To ensure the widespread adoption and success of the green certificates programme, the MOEI is actively collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders. These include the private sector and other government agencies. Moreover, this collaborative approach will help drive the programme’s success.

“We work closely with businesses, industries, and government entities to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices,” said Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. “We provide the necessary guidance and support. By fostering these strategic partnerships, we aim to create a synergistic ecosystem. This will accelerate the UAE’s transition towards a more sustainable future.”

Anticipated Impact and Benefits

The implementation of the national green certificates programme is expected to yield significant environmental, economic, and social benefits for the UAE and its citizens.

“The widespread adoption of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies will substantially reduce the UAE’s carbon emissions,” said Dr. Fatima Al Foora Al Shamsi, Assistant Undersecretary for Electricity, Water, and Future Energy at the MOEI. “This effort contributes to global climate change mitigation. Additionally, it will improve air quality and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. Moreover, it will create new job opportunities in the renewable energy and sustainability sectors.”

Furthermore, the programme’s focus on promoting sustainable practices and environmental protection is anticipated to enhance the UAE’s international reputation, positioning the country as a global leader in sustainable development.

Aligning with National Sustainability Goals

The launch of the national green certificates programme aligns seamlessly with the UAE’s broader sustainability agenda and its commitment to the Paris Agreement. This initiative reinforces the country’s determination to address the pressing challenges of climate change and contribute to a more sustainable future for all.

“This programme is a critical component of the UAE’s comprehensive strategy to enhance environmental sustainability and support global climate action efforts,” said H.E. Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. “By driving the adoption of green practices and technologies, we are taking a significant step forward. Our journey towards a greener, more resilient UAE is well underway.”

As the MOEI’s green certificates programme gains momentum, it will catalyze a transformative shift in the UAE’s environmental landscape. This initiative will set a new benchmark for sustainable development in the region and beyond.
