The Pivotal Role of Education in Climate Action

As the world gears up for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) this year, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is not just playing host but is also showcasing its commitment to sustainability. The nation’s higher education institutions are leading this charge, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in curricula and infrastructure.

A Flurry of Academic Activity:

With COP28 set to be staged from 30 November to 12 December 2023 at Expo City in Dubai, universities across the UAE have witnessed a surge in sustainability-related activities. Andrew Mackenzie from Middlesex University Dubai highlighted the UAE’s leadership in sustainability engagement, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Governmental Support and Global Engagements:

The UAE government’s support for climate change programs is evident, with Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE minister of industry and advanced technology, heading the COP28 presidency. Notably, a high-level session titled “Rewiring Education for People and Planet: The road to COP28” was hosted in New York, emphasizing the role of education in climate action.

Universities at the Forefront:

Middlesex University Dubai, a member of the Universities Climate Network, has been actively promoting sustainability. From events focusing on fashion sustainability and food security to co-hosting a Climate Law and Governance Day with the University of Cambridge, the institution is deeply involved in the lead up to COP28. Mackenzie emphasized the importance of cooperation between academia, government, and industry in addressing climate challenges.

Sustainability in Curricula:

UAE universities are integrating sustainability into their courses. While it’s essential for students to have sustainability credentials, they should also be adept problem solvers. Institutions like New York University Abu Dhabi and Zayed University have significantly expanded their sustainability-driven classes and programs.

UAE’s Commitment to Global Goals:

Embracing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UAE universities are making strides in research and impact. The state-backed United Arab Emirates University, for instance, has published thousands of research papers aligned with the SDGs.

Greening the Campuses:

Beyond curricula, universities in the UAE are investing in sustainable infrastructure, from solar panels to water-saving technologies. While the UAE faces challenges due to its climate and economic reliance on hydrocarbons, its universities are taking hands-on strategies to reduce their carbon footprint.

Addressing the Criticism:

The choice of the UAE as the host for COP28 and the appointment of Sultan Al Jaber as its president have been points of contention, given the nation’s ties to the oil industry. However, Mackenzie believes that the UAE’s ambitious climate targets and its history of achieving them can pave the way for meaningful change.

In Summary:

  • UAE universities are intensifying their focus on sustainability in preparation for COP28.
  • The government is actively supporting educational initiatives related to climate change.
  • Institutions like Middlesex University Dubai are actively promoting sustainability through various events and collaborations.
  • There’s a significant emphasis on integrating sustainability into university curricula.
  • UAE universities are aligning with global goals like the UN SDGs.
  • Despite criticisms, the UAE’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its ambitious targets and initiatives.
