In a remarkable display of its commitment to sustainability, the United Arab Emirates is poised to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity while simultaneously witnessing a surge in the number of sustainability and environmental experts joining its workforce.
The UAE’s strategic plan to add 6.34 gigawatts (GW) of power capacity from 12 green energy projects by 2030 underscores the country’s unwavering dedication to transitioning towards a more sustainable energy landscape. Concurrently, the nation has experienced a 26% increase in the number of professionals with expertise in environmental matters over the past 12 months, further bolstering its green workforce.
“The UAE’s dual focus on renewable energy expansion and cultivating a highly skilled green workforce is a testament to its holistic approach to sustainability,” said Ryan McPherson, the regional director for the Energy Industries Council (EIC) covering the Middle East, Africa, Russia, and CIS.
The planned 6.34 GW of power capacity from the 12 green projects will significantly contribute to the UAE’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and solidifying its position as a regional leader in renewable energy.
Alongside this energy transition, the UAE is witnessing a surge in the demand for sustainability and environmental professionals. The country now boasts a workforce of over 35,000 individuals who prioritize sustainability and environmental compliance as their primary skillset, a 26% increase over the past year.
This green workforce boom is particularly evident in sectors such as packaging, healthcare, hospitality, automotive, and banking, where job opportunities for sustainability specialists have increased by as much as 79%, 79%, 64%, 61%, and 54%, respectively.
“The UAE’s commitment to sustainability is not only reflected in its energy initiatives but also in the growing emphasis on environmental expertise across various industries,” said McPherson. “This dual focus on renewable energy and a skilled green workforce will be crucial in driving the country’s sustainable development agenda.”
As the UAE prepares to host the highly anticipated COP28 global climate change conference, where over 80,000 delegates are expected to gather, the country’s leadership in renewable energy and sustainability is poised to take center stage.
Through its strategic investments in green energy projects and the cultivation of a robust green workforce, the UAE is setting an example for the region and the world, demonstrating that sustainable growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
