Dubai Sets a Green Benchmark with Landmark Residential Waste Solution

Dubai, May 8, 2025 – In a groundbreaking step towards urban sustainability, Dr. Samiullah Khan, Chief Sustainability Officer of Fakhruddin Holdings, has led the launch of the UAE’s first in-building waste management system that diverts 90% of waste from landfills. Known as the 90:90 Waste Management Initiative, this transformative program was officially unveiled at Trafalgar Central in Dubai International City on May 7, 2025.

Designed to redefine sustainability in residential high-rises, this initiative integrates composting and waste sorting systems directly within the building infrastructure, making it a national first, and a model poised for replication across the UAE.

A Scalable, Zero-Cost Model for Smart Cities

The 90:90 initiative is built on three pillars: source segregation, zero-cost implementation, and community education. With the UAE aiming to close landfills by 2027 and meet its Net Zero 2050 targets, this initiative represents a significant leap toward achieving national climate goals.

Key Features:

  • Color-coded waste bags for easy sorting: green for organic, black for general.
  • On-site composting units to process organic waste.
  • No added cost to residents, 100% funded by the developer.
  • Live sustainability dashboards and waste reduction reporting.

“We wanted to prove that sustainable innovation can be built into everyday living without adding complexity or cost,” said Yousuf Fakhruddin, CEO & Managing Partner at Fakhruddin Properties. “Our in-building composting solution improves air quality, fosters greener lifestyles, and aligns with the UAE’s long-term vision for smart, sustainable cities.”

Leadership and Vision: Dr. Samiullah Khan’s Sustainability Blueprint

According to Dr. Samiullah Khan, the initiative reflects a shift in mindset where waste is no longer viewed as a liability but as a resource.

“We’ve created a blueprint for sustainable living that is scalable, affordable, and impactful,” Dr. Khan said. “This is not a pilot, it’s a movement toward climate-resilient cities. By connecting citizen participation with smart technology and clear governance, we’re driving real change.”

Event Highlights and Notable Guests

The system launches featured live demonstrations showcasing the full waste lifecycle—from disposal to compost. Panels with sustainability experts explored how such plug-and-play models could be rapidly deployed across urban developments in the Middle East and beyond.

Notable attendees included:

  • His Royal Excellency Prince Saud bin Abdul Aziz bin Saud
  • Mr. Mohammad bin Hammad, Head of Real Estate Relations, RERA
  • Her Excellency Laila El Atfani, President of Business Gate & Woman Business Circle
  • Senior representatives from Dubai Municipality, Dubai Land Department, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment
