Holcim UAE officially launches ECOCycle® to advance circular construction

25 MAY 2026

The launch marks a bold step toward building a more sustainable UAE by turning construction demolition materials into valuable new resources. Dubai, UAE, May 20, 2026: Holcim UAE officially launched ECOCycle® at the Make It In The Emirates event at ADNEC Centre, Abu Dhabi, marking a landmark moment in the country’s journey toward smarter, more sustainable construction. ECOCycle uses Holcim’s advanced circular technology to accelerate change, building cities from cities and closing the loop in construction. The future of construction in the UAE is no longer just about building taller skylines or faster infrastructure. Increasingly, it is about building responsibly.

Across the country, conversations around sustainability have shifted from ambition to action, with businesses now under growing pressure to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and rethink how cities are built from the ground up. More than just a new product platform, ECOCycle represents a significant shift in how the construction industry can approach waste, materials, and long-term sustainability. At its core, the initiative focuses on one powerful idea – building cities from cities.

A Growing Waste Challenge in the UAE

Construction and demolition activities remain one of the largest contributors to solid waste globally, and the UAE is no exception. Rapid urban development, infrastructure expansion, and continuous real estate growth have resulted in enormous volumes of discarded construction materials every year. According to industry estimates, construction demolition materials account for nearly 70% to 75% of the UAE’s total solid waste generation. Much of this material historically ends up in landfill sites despite containing reusable concrete, aggregates, metals, and other valuable resources.

For years, the construction sector followed a largely linear model – extract, build, demolish, discard. While effective for rapid development, this model creates long-term environmental strain through excessive resource extraction, landfill dependency, and high carbon emissions. ECOCycle aims to change that equation. Instead of viewing demolished buildings as waste, Holcim’s circular technology platform treats them as future building resources. Materials recovered from old structures are reprocessed and reintegrated into new construction projects, significantly reducing the need for virgin raw materials. The result is a closed-loop system designed to support a more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible construction sector.

Building Cities from Cities

The phrase “building cities from cities” may sound symbolic, but the concept behind ECOCycle is remarkably practical. Concrete from demolished buildings can be crushed, processed, and transformed into recycled aggregates. These materials can then be reused in new construction applications without compromising structural quality or performance. By recovering valuable resources already embedded within urban infrastructure, the industry can dramatically reduce waste generation while conserving natural materials. Speaking during the launch, Ali Said, CEO of Holcim UAE and Oman, emphasized the wider significance of the initiative.

“With ECOCycle, we’re building cities from cities, closing the loop in construction and helping our customers achieve their ambitious circularity goals – by providing building materials and solutions that carry this label, with no compromise on quality and performance. At the same time, we’re reducing the use of primary materials, conserving natural resources, and minimizing the volume of materials sent to landfill.” The statement reflects a growing industry-wide shift toward circularity – an approach where materials are continuously reused rather than discarded after a single lifecycle. For a region experiencing continuous urban expansion, this approach has enormous relevance.

Why Circular Construction Matters More Than Ever

The construction industry has long been one of the world’s most resource-intensive sectors. Traditional building processes consume large quantities of sand, stone, cement, water, and energy. At the same time, demolished infrastructure creates massive waste streams that are difficult to manage sustainably. Circular construction offers an alternative model. By extending the lifecycle of construction materials, companies can reduce environmental impact while also improving operational efficiency. This is becoming increasingly important as governments across the Gulf region strengthen sustainability regulations and align infrastructure strategies with climate goals.

The UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative has accelerated demand for greener building solutions, especially in sectors such as real estate, transportation, hospitality, and industrial development. Developers are also under increasing pressure from investors and stakeholders to deliver projects that meet internationally recognized sustainability standards. ECOCycle products are designed to support green building certifications, giving architects, contractors, and developers greater confidence when integrating recycled materials into modern projects.

Proven Technology with Global Success

While the UAE launch marks the regional introduction of ECOCycle, the technology itself has already demonstrated success internationally. Holcim has implemented circular construction practices across several global markets, particularly in Europe where sustainability regulations have accelerated innovation within the building sector. One of the company’s most notable achievements took place in France, where an entire residential building was successfully constructed using 100% recycled concrete – a global first for the industry.

This global track record is particularly important for the UAE market, where developers prioritize both innovation and reliability. Sustainable solutions are only scalable if they maintain the same structural integrity, safety, and performance expected from conventional materials. Holcim’s approach attempts to address both environmental and commercial concerns simultaneously.

Sustainability Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage

Across the Middle East, sustainability is increasingly influencing investment decisions, procurement strategies, and urban planning frameworks. Major real estate developers are integrating ESG targets into project planning. Governments are tightening environmental regulations. Investors are paying closer attention to lifecycle emissions and resource efficiency. In this evolving landscape, circular construction is no longer viewed as an optional environmental initiative. It is becoming a strategic business advantage. Companies capable of reducing waste, lowering embodied carbon, and improving material efficiency are likely to play a stronger role in the future construction economy.

For the UAE specifically, circular construction also aligns closely with national ambitions around innovation, industrial development, and sustainable urbanization. Initiatives like Make It In The Emirates continue encouraging industries to localize advanced manufacturing capabilities while strengthening sustainable economic growth. The launch of ECOCycle within this environment reflects how sustainability and industrial innovation are becoming increasingly interconnected.

The Human Side of Sustainable Construction

Beyond policies, metrics, and industry frameworks lies a more human reality. Cities are ultimately built for people. The quality of future urban environments will directly influence how communities live, work, and grow. Cleaner construction practices mean healthier ecosystems, lower landfill dependency, reduced resource depletion, and more resilient infrastructure for future generations. There is also a growing emotional shift happening within the construction industry itself. Sustainability is no longer being viewed as a limitation or regulatory burden. Increasingly, it is becoming a source of innovation and long-term opportunity. The launch of ECOCycle reflects this broader transition. It signals a move away from waste-heavy construction models toward a future where buildings are not seen as disposable assets, but as part of an ongoing material lifecycle.

A Defining Moment for Circular Construction in the Region

Holcim UAE’s launch of ECOCycle arrives at a time when the Middle East construction sector is actively searching for smarter, cleaner, and more resource-efficient solutions. As urban growth accelerates and sustainability expectations rise, the ability to recover and reuse materials at scale may become one of the defining features of future-ready cities. By introducing circular construction technology into the UAE market, Holcim is contributing to a wider transformation already reshaping the global built environment. The challenge now is not whether sustainable construction is possible. The technology, expertise, and demand already exist. The real question is how quickly industries are willing to embrace a model where waste is no longer treated as an endpoint, but as the beginning of the next generation of sustainable cities.
