Dubai Leads the Way: Establishing a Dedicated Environment and Climate Change Authority

In a bold move to accelerate its sustainability agenda, the Emirate of Dubai has taken a significant step forward by establishing the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority. This new entity, spearheaded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, aims to drive the city’s green transformation and solidify its position as a global leader in environmental stewardship.

The primary objective of the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority is to promote sustainable practices across various sectors, preserve biodiversity, and expand natural reserves and green spaces within the emirate. This strategic move aligns with Dubai’s broader commitment to becoming one of the world’s most environmentally resilient cities, setting an example for others to follow.

“The establishment of the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority is a testament to Dubai’s unwavering dedication to the global fight against climate change,” said Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, the newly appointed Director-General of the authority. “This new entity will serve as the driving force behind Dubai’s ambitious environmental goals, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.”

One of the key priorities of the authority is to achieve a complete transition to clean energy by 2050 and a 90% improvement in air quality according to WHO guidelines by 2033. Additionally, the authority will focus on initiatives and policies aimed at increasing the contribution of the circular and green economy to Dubai’s GDP, in line with the emirate’s Economic Agenda D33.

“This is a significant step forward in Dubai’s journey towards a sustainable future,” said Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. “By establishing a dedicated authority, we are sending a clear message that environmental protection and climate action are at the forefront of our agenda.”

The Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority will also work to promote green finance initiatives and incentivize the financial sector and banks to prioritize and support sustainable investments, further bolstering Dubai’s position as a hub for green finance.

This bold move by Dubai underscores the Emirate’s commitment to leading by example and driving the global transition towards a more sustainable future. As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change, Dubai’s establishment of the Environment and Climate Change Authority serves as a model for other cities and nations to emulate, paving the way for a greener, more resilient, and prosperous tomorrow.
