Deep-Ocean Lava Rubble Emerges as Natural Ally in UAE’s Net Zero Strategy
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Abu Dhabi, UAE — December 12, 2025 — Groundbreaking research has revealed that deep-ocean volcanic lava rubble functions as a highly effective natural carbon dioxide (CO₂) sponge, capable of sequestering enormous volumes of carbon in mineral form for millions of years. The findings, derived from analyses of lava breccia cores in the South Atlantic Ocean, offer a promising new avenue for climate mitigation strategies worldwide — insights that hold particular significance for the United Arab Emirates’ Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and its broader sustainability agenda.

Unlocking Nature-Based Carbon Sequestration

Researchers from the University of Southampton and collaborating institutions have shown that porous lava rubble can store two to forty times more carbon than previously studied solid rock formations. Its highly reactive mineral surfaces facilitate the transformation of CO₂ into stable carbonates, offering a long-term natural storage solution. For the UAE, this discovery complements existing mitigation frameworks, including renewable energy deployment, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and green hydrogen initiatives, by illustrating the potential of nature-based geological carbon sinks.

Strategic Implications for UAE Climate Policy

The UAE’s unique environmental context — arid desert climate, high temperatures, and scarce water resources — underscores the importance of diverse and resilient carbon management strategies. Incorporating insights from natural geological sequestration could enhance national climate action, particularly in planning long-term carbon offset programs and informing sustainability investment portfolios. This aligns with the UAE’s broader vision to diversify energy sources, strengthen climate resilience, and maintain global leadership in sustainability innovation.

Fostering Research Collaboration and Innovation

The discovery opens opportunities for the UAE to collaborate internationally on advanced carbon sequestration research. Potential initiatives could include:

  • Investigating regional analogues of lava or mineral-rich formations for natural CO₂ storage potential.
  • Developing enhanced mineral weathering techniques adapted to arid environments.
  • Integrating natural sequestration methods into national carbon accounting and offset strategies.

Engaging in such research supports the UAE’s goal of establishing Abu Dhabi and other hubs as centres for climate innovation and scientific leadership, bridging the gap between global research breakthroughs and actionable national strategies.

Complementing Technology with Nature

While engineered solutions such as CCUS facilities, renewable energy infrastructure, and green hydrogen projects remain central to the UAE’s climate strategy, nature-based carbon storage presents an additional layer of long-term resilience. The lava rubble’s ability to sequester carbon for millions of years demonstrates the value of harnessing natural geological processes alongside advanced technology, providing UAE investors, policymakers, and industrial stakeholders with multi-faceted pathways for achieving carbon neutrality.

Supporting UAE Vision 2030 and 2050 Goals

This research is highly relevant to the UAE’s strategic frameworks, including Net Zero by 2050 and Energy Strategy 2050, which aim to reduce carbon intensity, diversify energy sources, and enhance national climate resilience. By integrating scientific insights into nature-based carbon sequestration, the UAE can strengthen its sustainability credibility, attract global investment in green technologies, and maintain its competitive position in international climate leadership.

The revelation that deep-ocean lava rubble acts as a massive natural CO₂ sponge provides more than a scientific curiosity — it represents a strategic opportunity for the UAE to expand its climate mitigation toolkit. By combining nature-based solutions with engineered carbon management and renewable energy investments, the UAE can craft a holistic, resilient, and forward-looking strategy for carbon neutrality. As the nation pursues its ambitious sustainability objectives, leveraging lessons from Earth’s natural processes will help reinforce Abu Dhabi’s role as a global hub for innovative climate solutions and ensure long-term ecological and economic stability.
