“Engineering Net Zero for the Middle East” Conference Inspires Collaboration at RIT Dubai

Dubai, UAE – October 28, 2025:
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) proudly hosted its one-day flagship event, “Engineering Net Zero for the Middle East – CIBSE Decarbonisation Conference 2025,” at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai in Dubai Silicon Oasis.

The conference brought together policymakers, engineers, sustainability experts, consultants, and industry leaders to tackle one of the region’s most urgent challenges — decarbonising the built environment.

Setting the Stage for a Sustainable Future

This high-impact forum reflected the growing urgency of the global climate agenda while emphasising local solutions for regional realities. As the UAE continues to accelerate its path toward net-zero emissions by 2050, CIBSE’s event provided a powerful platform to align engineering excellence with sustainability innovation.

The day featured insightful keynote addresses, technical sessions, and dynamic panel discussions exploring critical issues such as:

  • Passive design in hot climates
  • Building performance optimisation
  • Refrigerant innovation and indoor environmental quality (IEQ)
  • Energy transition strategies for industrial and commercial sectors

Each session highlighted the intersection of technology, policy, and practical implementation—addressing both global trends and Gulf-specific challenges.

Global Lessons, Local Action

A standout theme across the discussions was the importance of translating international sustainability standards into the Middle Eastern context.
Topics such as “Setting the Net Zero Ambition,” “Global Sustainability in Cooling: Innovations & Insights,” and “Decarbonising Digital Infrastructure” (including data centres) demonstrated how advanced engineering practices can drive meaningful change when adapted to regional conditions.

The panel on “Adapting Net Zero for MENA” drew particular attention, offering examples of how engineering resilience and smart design can combat extreme heat, high cooling loads, and water scarcity — all while maintaining comfort and efficiency.

Empowering Collaboration

Beyond technical discussions, the conference prioritised cross-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. Networking sessions encouraged participants to forge partnerships that can accelerate real-world decarbonisation initiatives across the Middle East.

“The value of such a conference lies in its ability to connect thinkers and doers,” said Ruth Carter, CEO of CIBSE.

“We believe engineering must lead the path to net zero in the built environment — especially in climates like ours, where the challenge is heightened.”

Adding to her remarks, Imran Shaikh, CIBSE MENA Chair, noted:

“Through this conference at RIT Dubai, we’re combining global best practice with local insight, equipping engineers and decision-makers across the region with the tools to deliver real decarbonisation.”

Why It Matters for the Middle East

The Middle East’s unique environmental pressures — rapid urbanisation, high cooling demand, desalination dependencies, and growing energy needs — make it a key region in the global climate response.

By integrating UK-based engineering standards with local expertise, CIBSE aims to help regional stakeholders create scalable, context-appropriate pathways toward a net-zero future.

This alignment of global frameworks with regional realities signals a transformative step forward for sustainability leadership in the Gulf.

The Role of RIT Dubai

Hosting the conference at RIT Dubai underscored the university’s position as a hub for sustainability research, engineering innovation, and academic-industry collaboration in the UAE.

The event also served as a living learning experience, offering students and faculty the chance to engage directly with professionals shaping the region’s decarbonisation roadmap.

“At RIT Dubai, we’re not only educating the next generation of engineers,” said a university spokesperson,
“we’re empowering them to be innovators who turn sustainability vision into measurable action.”

Bridging the UK and UAE: A Shared Vision

CIBSE’s commitment to engineering excellence and environmental responsibility has long extended beyond the UK. Through partnerships and knowledge-sharing initiatives in the Middle East, the organisation continues to reinforce its role as a global catalyst for sustainable building innovation.

By bridging UK expertise with UAE ambition, the 2025 conference reflected a united vision — one where collaboration drives measurable progress toward net-zero infrastructure, smarter cities, and a resilient built environment.

About CIBSE

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is a UK-based professional body supporting engineers who design, install, operate, and maintain essential building systems including lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, heating, and power.
With a mission to promote sustainability, system innovation, and technical excellence, CIBSE operates globally to shape the future of the built environment.

About RIT Dubai

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai, located in Dubai Silicon Oasis, is an American-accredited university offering degrees in engineering, computing, and business.
