As the Middle East accelerates its sustainability agenda, Ramboll is contributing expertise to support environmentally responsible development in the built environment. Guided by its strategy, Partner for Sustainable Change, Ramboll aims to help create societies where people and nature flourish. This work is structured around four focus areas: Decarbonising for Net Zero, Resilient Societies and Liveability, Resource Management and Circular Economy, and Biodiversity and Ecosystems.

The recently published Design Excellence 2024–2025 yearbook highlights approaches that integrate environmental, social and economic considerations into design. It explores how design can address learning, technology and resilience to deliver solutions that reduce environmental impact and support inclusivity. Central to this approach is considering entire ecosystems and social structures rather than isolated components – integrating restoration, cultural awareness and adaptive strategies into planning and execution. In regions such as the Middle East, where rapid urbanisation intersects with fragile ecosystems, this approach aims to balance growth with environmental responsibility.
One area of focus is data centre sustainability. Global electricity demand from data centres is projected to reach 130 GW by 2028, around 3% of total consumption, making their environmental impact significant. Ramboll’s whitepaper, Developing Sustainable Data Centres: A Strategic Roadmap to Achieve Net Zero Carbon and Reduce Environmental Impact, outlines strategies for reducing both operational and embodied carbon. These include improving energy efficiency, sourcing renewable energy and implementing circular practices and water neutrality.
“Data centres powered by AI are driving unprecedented energy demand,” notes Ed Ansett, Ramboll’s Global Director of Technology and Innovation. “Embedding sustainability and circularity from the start can help mitigate these challenges.” This reflects Ramboll’s broader design principle: anticipate complexity, embrace innovation and integrate environmental considerations into technology-driven projects.

As governments and businesses in the Middle East work towards net zero, Ramboll provides technical expertise and local insight to support projects that aim to reduce environmental impact and improve social outcomes. From urban planning to digital infrastructure, the goal is to contribute to solutions that align progress with environmental stewardship.
